Acting Governor Launches Guidebook Towards Jakarta as a Global City

Acting Jakarta Governor, Heru Budi Hartono, attended the launch of "Jakarta's Path to Top 20 Global City, Book 1: Jakarta's Profile for Global Competitiveness" book. This is the first series of eight books launched by the Jakarta Provincial Government together with global management consulting firm Kearney which discuss topics around the economy, human resources, infrastructure, and society.

The launching was also attended by Jakarta Regional Development Planning Board Head, Atika Nur Rahmania; Economic Expert and Special Staff of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Raden Pardede; President Director of Kearney Indonesia, Shirley Santoso; and Kearney Expert from the United States, Rudolph Lohmeyer. In addition, representatives of a number of Ministries, Regional Governments, and the private sector were also present.

Since beginning of his term, Heru said, Jakarta's efforts to become a global city have been echoed. Competing with big cities in the world is the direction of Jakarta's development focus. Heru also continues to target Jakarta's ranking as a global city to increase in the Global City Index.

Heru also appealed to his staff to remain optimistic in developing Jakarta to improve the welfare of the community. Development is carried out in various fields, including economy, health, transportation, and flood control.

"Jakarta must not stop in building infrastructure and economy. Jakarta's last year rank was in 74th. My target is to crawl in 50, 40, and 20 by focusing on transportation, Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises, Information Technology, and so on," Heru said, as quoted from Jakarta Provincial Government's press release.

Heru hopes the book can be used as a guideline for all his staff for the transformation of Jakarta into a Global City.

"We are launching a book titled Jakarta's Path to Top 20 Global City today. Our concepts for the future are written in eight books in total. Head of agencies are able to see the outline from the book. Together with the Regional-Owned Enterprise, we also got knowledge from experts to realize Jakarta as a Global City," Heru added.

Heru hopes that Jakarta can learn from other global cities and asks all levels of Jakarta Provincial Government to be open-minded in adopting concepts from cities in other countries that can be applied in Jakarta.

"Osaka is able to explore local culture identity, Guangzhou strengthens academic research capacity, and Melbourne creates a smart city. Do not compare Jakarta to cities outside Indonesia that are not comparable in size, population density, and characteristics," he continued.

Heru assessed that synergy is needed with various regional apparatuses from urban village and sub-district head, as well as BUMD to work hard and open up insights in building Jakarta that has various potentials to become a global city.

"The economy will be mor running, UMKM is moving, people can live well, transportation is neat and so on if Jakarta keeps running for Top 20 Global Cities. I hope the residents can work together to realize it," Heru stated.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Regional Development Planning Board Head, Atika Nur Rahmania explained guide steps ahead of Jakarta as a Global City is mapped in the book. Making Jakarta a leading Global City can be realized through deeper understanding and closer synergy.

"To achieve the vision, stakeholders from the public and private sectors are involved in in-depth discussion. Raising awareness of Jakarta's as strategic position and enormous potential is also target of this launching," she said.

Well-known panelists were also invited during a pane discussion such as Chairman of Indonesia Financial Group (IFG) Imam Rachman, CEO of IDX, Sanath Kumar; SEA Healthcare, Lead Kearney, and Director of Strategic Development of Dayalima Group, Yuri Yogaswara.

Topics discussed during the discussion were Jakarta's competition in the industrial and economic sectors, the role of the capital market in the vision of a global city, the condition of the healthcare industry in Indonesia, and strategies for improving the quality of the workforce.
